Is This the Best Paleo Traveling Snack?

Posted in Uncategorized

Fly&Dine started as a blog about food while you travel and I mostly covered meals, but every now and then I’d post a story about the unsung hero of traveling: snacks. This is kind of backwards, because while meals are definitely important, I’d say most of my travel days (by air, at least) focus much more on snacks. I’ve long lamented the calorie-laden snack bar choices out there — i.e. dessert masquerading as a protein bar — but I think I finally found my favorite traveling snack and it has all the bonafides that the paleo community goes crazy for.

I was at Trader Joe’s with my lady and happened to glance at the impulse buy section at the register. Next to the dark chocolate batons and ginger mints, we saw a pile of EPIC Chicken Sriracha bars. After examining the label, I was shocked to find out that they had 15g of protein and zero sugar or sugar substitutes. That’s a feat that not a lot of protein bars can accomplish.

For $2.50, it was definitely worth the gamble and I’m so glad I tried it because this protein bar is perfect for traveling. It’s got a seriously awesome spicy flavor (thanks, sriracha) and a set of nutritional facts that would make a full gym of paleo-dieting CrossFitters grunt with approval. In each bar, there’s just 100 calories, 1g carb, and 4g of fat along with the previously mentioned 15g of protein. I was floored. Normally, I have trouble finding enough protein without resorting to a bag full of hard-boiled eggs when I’m flying around the globe. These EPIC bars change that.

Since I don’t want to have to travel to Trader Joe’s ever time I want a new stockpile of these bars, I found them on Amazon. Even better? They’re cheaper than they are at TJoe’s. If you buy the 12-pack box, they’re just $2.33 each. It’s more expensive than I’d like it to be, but that’s just because I wish everything I liked was a dollar. Just over two bucks seems totally fair to keep me satiated and even more fair when you see how much you’d pay for one of those snack boxes on the plane.

Here’s what EPIC says about this bar:

In response to the success of EPIC’s first chicken based protein bar, we quickly responded with our brand new spicy sriracha chicken bar! The Chicken Sriracha Bar starts with a stunning 15g of savory whole muscle meat protein. We then add a custom sriracha spice blend to harmonize notes of mild tartness and warm heat. The dominant sriracha flavor is complimented with the nutty taste of organic chia seeds and guaranteed to inspire your next EPIC adventure!

I love discovered new products that make my travel experience better. This EPIC Chicken Sriracha bar definitely fits the bill. In fact, I loved it so much that I immediately reached out to EPIC to see if I could sample some of their other flavors. They sent me a nice assortment, but at the end of the day I still really preferred the chicken sriracha flavor to anything else on their roster. I also like the bars better than any of the jerky products they offer, based mostly on the texture. The bars have a much softer, more pliable texture than any sort of jerky gives you.

If you’ve got any trips coming up, I highly recommend picking up a box of these bars. Great way to stave off hunger without having to resort to whatever’s rolling down the aisle on the service cart.

Disclosure: This is not a paid endorsement in any way. I’m just a fan of this product and wanted to share my newfound love with you. That said, I may get a commission from Amazon by clicking on the Amazon links in this story.

  1. I love the bison bars myself, but the question is whether these type of bars would get confiscated at some of the more pernicketey agriculture inspections, like NZ and Oz.

    • Yeah, that’s a great question. I’m sure you’d be totally fine traveling domestically, but internationally might be an issue for sure. If they’re packaged, though, perhaps you’d get a pass?
