Eat Like a Local at San Antonio International Airport (SAT)

Posted in At the Terminal, Domestic US, SAT

If you find yourself flying to the Alamo to recreate a scene from Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure…

…your airport dining options just got a major facelift. Continuing the trend of bringing local chefs into the fold at terminals around the country, HMSHost has partnered up with San Antonio favorite Johnny Hernandez to open versions of his Mexican restaurants inside SAT.

La Gloria gives you Mexican street food for the sky with tacos, Oaxacan tlayudas (think of them like Mexican pizzas), and cocteles (aka cocktails – the shrimp kind, not the liquor kind). The Fruteria provides healthier options with yogurt, fruit cups, juices, smoothies, and that street food favorite: fresh fruit with chili-lime salt. At night, the space becomes a cocktail lounge (this time it’s the liquor kind) with tequila cocktails featuring fresh fruit.

There’s also Mission City Icehouse with a full menu designed by Chef Hernandez and new chain options, too, like Steak ‘n Shake (!), Famous Famiglia, and a combination Auntie Anne’s/Cinnabon. For Mediterranean fare, check out the new La Tapenade.

SAT is yet another terminal undergoing the foodie upgrade treatment and we (me) here at Fly&Dine welcome it with open stomachs.
