Mahekal Brings That Well-To-Do Mayan Vibe to Playa del Carmen

Posted in Mexico, North America, On the Ground

The coastlines of Playa del Carmen are covered in miles upon miles (kilometers upon kilometers?) of resorts, but after spending a weekend at Mahekal Beach Resort, there’s a good chance you won’t need to explore anywhere else in the Riviera Maya. That’s because Mahekal offers something for everyone: beachside villas, jungle apartments, several dining outlets, water sports, multiple pools on property, and a brand new spa that will give you just the right amount of serenity before you dive into another bottle of mezcal. A long weekend press trip gave Fly&Dine the chance to explore all things #MagicalMahekal and we came away very impressed.

Situated just down the road from Playa del Carmen’s well-known 5th Avenue shopping district, Mahekal is actually the result of a hospitality marriage between two former properties and the combined resort is nothing short of enormous. There’s now nearly 1,000 feet of beach with lounge chairs and daybeds ready for guests to relax next to a bucket of Coronitas and a full dive shop in case you’re feeling sporty. Go snorkeling on one of the world’s largest natural reefs or grab a stand-up paddleboard to SUP the afternoon away in the tropical coast. When you get hungry, head to Fuego for wood-fired dining that evokes trendy restaurants in nearby Tulum or try breakfast at Las Olas where a live-action quesadilla bar will wake you up (and comes included with your stay). No matter how you choose to spend your time at Mahekal, you’re going to leave extremely happy thanks to GM Julian Smaldoni and his very welcoming staff.
