Eat (with) the Rich: How Wealthy Moroccans Do Dinner Parties

Posted in Africa, Morocco, On the Ground

What’s it like to attend a dinner party in the home of rich Moroccans? It’s a question we all ask ourselves constantly. “Do they eat out of golden tagines?” “Do they eat coucous made of gold?” “Why am I so obsessed with asking gold-related questions right now?” These are the important questions that come up when thinking about our collective favorite topic.

Until last week, I was just like you. I stayed up late into the wee hours of the night pondering what a dinner party would be like if I ever got hooked up with the right people in Fez. I imagined lavish casbahs filled with wine-based waterslides and beautiful women country line-dancing to a Moroccan version of Taylor Swift’s seminal song “Shake It Off.”

A week later, I’ve lived the dream that we all have. I ate dinner with well-to-do Moroccans in a gorgeous home and I’m here to tell the tale.

If you’ve been following my travels here on Fly&Dine, you know I was just in Morocco on a press trip sponsored by Pompeian Olive Oil. The family that owns the company is absolutely lovely and threw a lavish dinner party for the attending journalists as well as some friends and family so we could experience a Moroccan dinner party for ourselves. It was everything I dreamed of and more.

Let’s start with some photos of the house itself. Ornate doesn’t even begin to describe it…

IMG_8391That’s all hand-carved and tiled, folks. Bespoke like a mofo.

IMG_8392The sitting room was impressive, but the accessories are what really made it for me.

IMG_8394A dinner party isn’t a dinner party without some food and this party was stocked to the limit with bowl after bowl of delicious salads to start. There were probably 25 people at the party. There was food for 100.

IMG_8405The next course was all meat-based with two kinds of lamb, two kinds of meatballs, a whole fish, and so much more.

IMG_8415Just look at that couscous, girl…

IMG_8430And a shot of the dinner party in action. I know, Mouna. That lamb is looking right.
