LAX Loses Iconic Encounter Restaurant

Posted in At the Terminal, Domestic US, LAX

Have you ever tried that weird alien-themed restaurant at LAX? If not, you never will. Encounter closed to little fanfare in December and the many kids who had their bar and bat mitzvahs there are weeping openly. I don’t know what kind of food they served and I don’t know if it was good or bad, but I do know that I was always curious about that giant restaurant in the sky. There are no plans to replace it at the moment, but perhaps there will be a new version when the aliens finally take over. It’s not like they’re going to eat at Taco Bell…

  1. I went there about 7 years ago during a long layover. I liked the food and while not inexpensive, it remember that it was NOT outrageously priced. However, it is a big pain to get there, especially if you have luggage since there’s no direct connection to any terminal. Plus as the LA Times article suggests, no one will leave the terminals for fear of the unknown: how long will it take to get back into the terminal and through security. So unless you have a 4 to 5 hour layover like I did, operating a restaurant here is just going to be difficult.
