I really, truly wanted to have a great post for you today. I wanted it to be insightful and informative and fun. Sadly, life took over and I didn’t get a chance to write anything. Instead, please enjoy this photo of a sandwich:
It’s a pastrami sandwich from the brand new Wexler’s Deli at Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles. That drink behind it? That’s a chocolate phospate. The chef, Micah Wexler, is making almost everything in-house and the pastrami is incredible. It’s thick cut and incredibly tender, with just the right amount of fat to let you know that this isn’t health food.
I’ll be back tomorrow with something much more useful. In the meantime, enjoy the photo.
Personally it is making me hungry as I sit on my DL CRJ900 flight with stale chips. Where I am going I am not sure if they have anything close to that great a sandwich. May have to hope something out of the chain world.
Sorry (but not that sorry) to make you hungry! I wish Delta served deli-quality pastrami but I think you’re out of luck. Soon, though, they’ll have Blue Smoke BBQ to enjoy so that’s a major upgrade.
How does it compare to Langer’s Deli pastrami sandwich?
An excellent question. I would say that nothing compares to Langer’s pastrami. Wexler’s is clearly modeled after Langer’s, but not quite there yet — if only for being the new kid on the block. In ten years, that could change but right now Wexler’s is a really admirable number two to Langer’s hold on the top spot.
Oh how I wish that was airplane food! I’d gladly pay an extra $20 on ANY ticket to have a sandwich like that. Lightly warmed just before serving, the only debate wold be horseradish or mustard. A cold, crisp kosher pickle wedge on the side, please. I’d starve for half the day to stuff that thing in my face. And yes, L.A. with a little free time is on the agenda for June. Yum!
